How to blog - tips and ideas for everyone

As a marketer who wants to show how smart and creative our team is, I am always asking my fellow employees to participate in our blogging efforts. Some of you might be asked to particpate at some point by your marketing team to providing your thoughts or experience on the latest trend, app you are currently using or just to write about something you enjoy dong. Most people don't understand how important it is not only on a professional level, but on a personal level as well to build these writing skills. These are some of the typical responses I usually get from a few people: "Why do we do this" and "I don't know what to blog about". All good questions and concerns, and I understand that most people find writing to be terrifying, but I am here to help!

Here are 5 reasons why your participation will not only help marketing, but also help you individually in the future:

  1. You’ll share your knowledge and expertise: It provides a platform to share knowledge and recommend good things we have discovered or learned to others.
  2. You’ll become a better writer: And becoming a better writer holds important benefits for the rest of your life — whether you are creating a presentation, a résumé, or an anniversary card for someone special!
  3. You’ll become a better thinker:  Because the process of writing includes recording thoughts on paper, the blogging process encourages you to stop and think deeper.
  4. You’ll inspire others: Blogging not only changes your life, it also changes the life of the reader.
  5. You’ll become more confident: You will quickly realize that you do live an important life with a unique view and have something to offer others.

1. Why do we need to blog?

  • Communication: A Blog is a way to expand relationships with prospects and clients and offering information of what exactly they are looking for.
  • Sales: Blogs help bring new leads to through search and viral interest, resulting in new accounts and ultimately more profits.
  • Visibility: If the blog becomes industry recognized, we will benefit from more visibility in the market and a stronger brand presence.
  • Community: A consistent publication rhythm (content creation) will help create a community around our company and expose our thoughts, knowledge, experience and updated information in a creative and casual way.

2. I don't know what to blog about..

Here are some ideas as well as some websites to get new ideas from:

How-to’s and Tips

  • Point out common mistakes in our industry and offer solutions on how to fix or avoid them.
  • Relate your how-to content to a current event or a celebrity. Example: “5 _____ Lessons from Lady Gaga” or “What the Election Teaches Us About ____”

Use Existing Content

  • Take the contrarian position – Find someone else’s article that you agree or disagree with. Introduce your blog post with what you specifically agree or disagree with it, and support your argument with a few concise points.
  • Do a weekly or daily links-roundup of relevant news for our community.
  • Find tips in other content, create a list of those tips and give links to those articles as the sources.
  • Re-interpret existing content: Collect the top motivational YouTube videos for our audience, top ebooks, top webinars or infographics.

Thought Leadership

  • Publish responses to frequently asked questions about our industry.
  • Create a list of trends to watch.
  • Compare and contrast: Different products, different approaches, different companies, different people, different places, etc.
