Our next interviewee for this series is with Director of User Experience + Design, Lillie Obioha. Lillie not only poses a poise that puts Elizabeth Taylor to shame, but she encourages us all to think outside the box and always find exciting and inspiring ways to make our clients stand out.
- What’s on your desk right now?
A few knickknacks, a stack of magazines for inspiration, photos of my family, a sketchbook, weekly planner, large monitor, 15' MacBook Pro, iPhone, and a cup of tea.
- What's the best lesson you ever got?
In art school, we were taught to step back physically and evaluate our work. Whether it's a sketch, line drawing, painting, sculpture or a design on a computer, it helps to view your work from a different perspective and angle. Stepping back truly helps because you can assess and take in all your work instead of focussing on one little element. In the new viewpoint, I see my design in a different way, and it helps me refocus my concept. Stepping back also works mentally and emotionally. Stepping back or distancing from bad news and sinking into an obsessive analysis is important. It's like a mental time-out where you allow your mind to seek alternative answers that are not evident when you are in a distressed situation.
- What do you do when you're not at work?
I like to keep myself busy. While I am not at Balance, I am an Adjunct Professor at the Art Institute of Washington. Outside of these two jobs that I have, I like to spend time with my family, planning my next vacation, practice on my hand-lettering, watch Netflix and TV shows, and cooking.
- Describe something you did at work that you are most proud of?
It may be a cliché, but I'm proud of everything I've accomplished at Balance. If I had to pick one thing, that would be the year-end video I produced and created that compiled all of our works of the year. I presented the video at our company's holiday party and it made me realize that we do lots of interesting, neat work at Balance. I also was happy to see my colleagues energized for the coming year!
- How do you think Balance Interactive stands out from the crowd?
Everyone at Balance is super talented and passionate about the work we do. We are continually uncovering new ways to think, to create, to teach, to learn, and to grow.
